Rosa Lópes
Student of Doña Mara Alvarado,
Spain, 18th century

Important, large sampler by Rosa López, embroidered while a student of Doña Mara Aludo with Hapsburg eagle and many intricate bands. This sampler, along with 11 others, is discussed in a recent essay, Samplers from Spain: An Introduction by Dr. Lynne Anderson, Founder and Director of the Sampler Consortium and Director of the Sampler Archive Project, which can be read here.
Inscription:
DA ROSA LOPES DESIPUL DA MARA ALVDO
Translation:
Doña Rosa Lopes Disciple Doña Mara [Alvarado].
Note as per Lynne Anderson – the raised V in ALVDO means there are other letters that should be inserted. I looked at a list of Spanish surnames that begin with AL, searching for ones that ended in DO with a V somewhere in the middle. The only one is Alvarado.
The sampler is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a molded and black painted frame.
