Beadwork pictures, using tiny glass beads stitched onto scrim, became popular in the mid-19th century and many needleworkers used this technique. One particular subject, the depiction of dogs and cats on cushions, was also very much in vogue then. This delightful miniature combines both of these with excellent results.
Using both translucent and opaque beads, the needleworker portrayed and shaded the cat wonderfully, from its delicate pink ears and bright green eyes to the tip of its tail. The blue background and black and white border complete this picture perfectly.
Excellent condition, conservation mounted into a period rosewood frame with a gilt liner.
