Worked in Boston and dated precisely on August 15th, 1826, this fine sampler was made by Maryetta Smith who was nine years old at the time; we always appreciate a sampler with the place name stitched directly on it.
The composition of the sampler is very pleasing and balanced, and Maryetta’s work is excellent, as the photo of the back of the sampler, taken prior to conservation mounting (below) indicates.Notable is the row of about 124 carefully accomplished eyelet stitches that march horizontally across the center of the sampler.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in an early 20th century frame.
