This handsome sampler, made at the very beginning of the 19th century, exhibits an interesting composition in the outline enclosure of the inscription and alphabets. A popular genre within this field is a type of sampler made in the early to mid-18th century which featured the ten commandments in a tablet structure with a double arch to the top. The format of Caroline Emerson’s sampler clearly echoes this earlier form.
The plants, basket of flowers and little birds decorating the top and bottom, along with the organic vines forming the side borders contribute to the appeal of this sampler.
Worked in silk on linen, it is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted into a molded and black painted frame.
