Silk Embroidery, Three Birds on Flowering Branches

  England, circa 1790

size of the embroidery: 11¼” x 18¾” • framed size: 13¼” x 20¾” • sold

A beautifully composed and particularly fine embroidered picture, this features three detailed birds perched on graceful branches. It was clearly stitched by a confident hand and exhibits an excellence accordingly.

The birds – a large finch, a sparrow and a white dove – are each portrayed in all of their feathery detail. The flower blossoms on leafy branches – two large Tudor roses and many rose buds, and several branches of jasmine – are also depicted with botanical accuracy. A bit of artistic license was taken with the lovely hillock, which is shown with multiple layers of scallops in assorted shades of green.

This was worked in silk on silk and is in excellent condition. It is in its early 19th century frame with UV filter glass.
