Pictorial and Verse Sampler

This highly developed sampler has a great deal going on and offers much to admire. A mother reaches towards her little daughter, whose small spotted dog is curled up nearby, another young lady wearing a spectacular spotted frock rides sidesaddle on a fine horse, a flock of sheep populates the lawn, and a cottage nestles into the background. Three standing angels, a white dove and two little insects fill the sky while the sun and moon are tucked into the clouds. Wonderfully organic flowers on leafy vines provide an outstanding framework. 

The verse, “Jesu, lover of My soul / Let me thy bosom fly / While the wearey waters roll / While the tempest is still high; / Hide me O my Saviour hide / Till the storm of life is past / Safe into the haven guide / O receive thy soul at last,” is a beloved Christian hymn written by Charles Wesley in 1738. It is celebrated for its imagery of finding refuge in Christ during life's storms.

This was worked in silk on fine gauze-like linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a molded and black painted frame.
