Oval Sampler
England, circa 1790
We very occasionally find samplers worked in an oval format and these are wonderful treasures. The composition is always highly refined and reflects the oval structure, and we generally find the needlework to be very delicate. Adding to the many attributes of this particular oval sampler is the fact that it remains in its very fine, original inlay frame.
The samplermaker began her text with, “Glory be to God / on high,” and continued with two fine verses, each with published origins in the United Kingdom in the middle of the 18th century, transcriptions below. A carefully worked border of strawberries on vine provides a fine framework.
A tiny blue angel floats at the very top, just inside the border and two birds and two little dogs embellish the verse entitled, Friendship. The needleworker stitched her initials, HS, at the very bottom, again just inside the border.
Worked in silk on linen, the sampler is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted into its original frame.
Glory be to God
--on high--
See how the Lillies flourish white and
fair! See how the Ravens fed from
Heaven are! Then ne'er distrust thy God for
Cloth and Bread, Whilst Lillies flourish and
the Ravens fed.
