Motif Sampler initialed GK
Netherlands, 1802
This Dutch sampler can be appreciated for its composition, motifs and extremely fine needlework. Notably the back is as beautifully finished as the front, see photo below.
The motifs include the Spies of Canaan (Joshua and Caleb holding a large bunch of grapes), the Free Maiden (a lady standing atop a gate symbolizing Liberty), an apple tree with a delightful man, his dog and the year, 1802, flanking the trunk, a wonderful house with large birds sitting on the fence posts, a recumbent deer, and many other classic elements. The center wreath is held by four fine heralding angels and the use of the eyelet stitch in various letters and motifs is notable.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a 19th century gold leaf frame.
