We find this tiny and very fine sampler to hold great appeal for many reasons, beginning with the endearing inscription at the top reads, which reads:
“When this you see rem / ember me the Gift is / Small but love is all.”
The motifs include a large basket of fruit, a pair of butterflies, two angels and linked hearts, along with sets of initials and the date, 1797. The original pale silk ribbon frames it well.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a rosewood veneer frame.
