A handsome English sampler, this is signed M. Trotter and dated 1817. The composition is very much in the classic style of a symmetrical, mirror-image pictorial format, centered on a stately and beautifully detailed house. The exception to the symmetry is the charming little line-up of three animals along the bottom.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition, with one tiny area a few missing stitches to the house. It has been conservation mounted and is in a fine, 19th century gold leaf frame.
