J. Rose

Lambeth Chapel Wesleyan Girls School,
London, England, 1847

new
sampler size: 8½" x 6¾" • framed size: 11" x 9½" • price: $1800

This sampler exhibits extremely fine needlework and a handsome composition while documenting a girls’ school in Lambeth, a neighborhood in South London. Lambeth Chapel was built in 1808 and served as a Wesleyan Methodist chapel and school for many years. As was generally the case, needlework would have been part of the curriculum for girls.

This is small sampler which, of course, means that the scale of the lettering and numbers becomes quite tiny. And, of course, we love the aphorism,

In all labor there is progress.”

Worked in silk on wool, the sample is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted into its fine, original rosewood frame with a gilt liner.
