Eudauxi Daumas
France, 1845
We find this splendid, large sampler very appealing on several levels – excellent composition filling all of the linen, strong color and contrast, and very fine needlework. Notably, the samplermaker was just 8 years old, adding further to the interest. The inscription reads,
“FAIT PAR MOI EUDAUXI DAUMAS AGEE DE 8 ANS / 1845 / VIVE JESUS ET MARIE DANS TOUS LES COEU,”
(it seems the final R didn’t fit) which translates to, “Made by me Eudauxi Daumas age 8 years / 1845 / Long live Jesus and Mary in all hearts.”
Our research into the identity of the samplermaker turned up her likely identity. Eudauxi Josephine Therese Daumas was born in 1836 in Marseille, France the daughter of Julien and Magdeleine Marguerite (Blanc) Daumas. On October 26, 1867, she married Dominique Henri, in Bouches-Du-Rhone, Provence-Alpes, Cote D’Azur.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a molded and black painted frame.
