Emily Lillywhite

England, 1833

sampler size: 16" x 12¼" • framed size: 21¼" x 17¼" • sold

A beautifully stitched sampler in the classic English samplermaking tradition, this depicts a fine brick house flanked by tall flowering plants in double-handled pots. The front lawn includes an interesting depiction of steps, with a pair of leggy black dogs standing at attention. Emily Lillywhite’s detailed gate and wide fence ground the scene perfectly.

The four line verse, a humble entreaty, was written by Alexander Pope and published as part of Universal Prayer in 1738.

The sampler was worked in silk on wool and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a period maple frame with a gilt inner liner.
