Several beautifully made samplers with specific shared characteristics are known to have been made in Philadelphia between 1826 and 1829; each of the samplers includes the wonderful aphorism, “Innocence is sweet.” Elizabeth Wolff’s sampler, along with the others, features the maker’s inscription above crossed leafy branches and inside an excellent wreath of flowers.
Many other depictions of flowers in baskets and bouquets fill the sampler and a fine border completes the composition.
Worked in silk on linen, the sampler is in excellent condition with a very minor weakness to the linen in one corner. It has been conservation mounted and is a fine mahogany corner-block frame.
