Elizabeth Morgan
England, 1833
Elizabeth Morgan featured the largest and most wonderful house and lawn scene that we believe we have ever found on a sampler. The wording of her inscription, “By Industry and Care this was Finish’d April 24th 1833,” is also unusual, adding further to the very appealing nature of her sampler.
Four birds sit atop the three-chimney Georgian house which has many windows, each with detailed mullions. The front lawn presents an octagonal enclosure with a terrific pair of white birds and trees with tiny white blossoms. Below the house and lawn scene, four deer climb up an incline, with fruit trees and birds nearby. Many other elements - urns of flowers, baskets of fruit, various flowers and pine trees – provide further embellishment and a carefully worked sawtooth border frames the composition well.
Worked in silk on wool, the sampler is in excellent condition, with a few very minor areas of darning to the wool. The needlework is all in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a gold frame.
