Elizabeth Lawrence
probably American, 1793

We find this endearing sampler to offer a highly appealing sentiment:
“During the Time of Life allotted me
Grant me Gracious God Health and Liberty
I beg no more if more thour’t Pleased to give
I will with thanks the Overplus receive.”
This was published in London in 1756 and included in a book entitled A Guide to the English Tongue by T. Dyche, Schoolmaster.
The sampler may have been one of Elizabeth Lawrence’s first needlework projects as her words run together, however her very neat stitching indicates a good level of competence. A photo taken of the back of the sampler prior to mounting is particularly instructive.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a beveled frame.
