Ann Biddle
England, 1799

Some English samplers demonstrate extremely fine needlework with long tracts of precise lettering and beautiful bands and borders. This excellent sampler is one of these - a very appealing example made by Ann Biddle in 1799.
The author of the words inscribed by Ann was a Scottish poet and physician, John Armstrong (1709 - 1799). Entitled, "The Art of Preserving Health," it extolled virtue as the strength and beauty of the soul. This was published in 1744, and it remained popular throughout the 18th century. John Armstrong lived in London and was part of the widely respected literary circle of the period.
Ann's sampler would have required great discipline to complete but it is also clear that she possessed a distinct aptitude in the needle arts.
Worked in silk on wool, it is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted into a fine maple frame.
