“Reconnaissance”
Silk Embroidery, France, circa 1800
We are delighted to have acquired this absolute gem – a very fine silk embroidery in its extraordinary, original gold leaf frame. The title, “Reconnaissance”, is stitched onto a banner along the top.
In this context, the word translates to mean gratitude or recognition. The scene likely illustrates a fable or symbolic moral lesson about working in harmony with two members of the animal kingdom telling the tale.
The elephant, symbolizing strength, wisdom and loyalty, is depicted wearing a red fringed ceremonial cloth known as a caparison. The crane, a symbol of longevity, balance and good fortune, is beautifully stitched with detailed wing and tail feathers. He looks backwards to the elephant, and both are set amidst somewhat exotic foliage.
This oval composition is surrounded by a dark brown stitched border and the stitched banner is made to look as if it is hanging from this border with five little attachments. The needleworker paid attention to every detail of this.
The excellent deep cove frame with its egg & dart and acanthus leaf composition retains its original gold leaf finish.
