sampler size: 4” x 4¼” • framed size: 6” x 6¼" • price: $2700

One of the most practical skills at which a needleworker could become proficient was darning as this allowed her to extend the life of valuable household textiles and clothing. This remarkable, diminutive sampler has four finely stitched pattern darns, along with four flower sprigs and the initials MB and date 1813. The darned squares and the flowers show good detail, revealing the patterns of each darn and the colorful shading of the petals. This little treasure is quite a rarity.

Worked in silk on wool it is in excellent condition with one very minor secured area of weakness to the wool. It has been conservation mounted and in a painted frame.
