Triangle is a small town in Broome County, New York, 18 miles north of Binghamton, established at the very end of the 18th century and formally named only in 1831. This interesting sampler was made there in 1835 by Louisa Caroline Green who may well have been a teacher of needlework as she was 22 years old at the time.
Her charming sampler is a practice piece in many ways, specifically the repetition within the alphabets and the random nature of the many folky motifs and designs. Folky dogs, birds, stars, and a little tea pot were included along with many stylized designs. A narrow border was worked at the right and left. The work was done primarily in teal blue with some pink and tan as well. Note that Louisa used a comma after each of her words, an unusual element.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is very good condition with some minor weakness to the linen. It is conservation mounted and in a black molded and painted frame.
