Eighteenth century German samplermakers developed a regional style that is well represented by this fine sampler, made at the end of the century and signed by its maker, Louisa Arneke. These samplers exhibit a variety of small scale early bands and many tightly worked alphabets, often appearing side-by-side (probably a carry over from the earlier very narrow band sampler format). They also feature a great assortment of pictorial motifs as is presented on Louisa's sampler: cupboard on base, birds and trees, a chair and table, sewing pillow, baskets, deer, crayfish, flowers and plants, people, trees, sun, the stag lying in the Garden of Holland, and a crowned angel with palm branch. Another classic sampler device, wreaths that enclose the initials of family members, was used as well. Louisa's work is an excellent example of this style of sampler.
The back of this sampler indicates that the colors are original and that it has always been of a muted palette of blue, tan, pink and pale green. It was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. Conservation mounted, it is in a 19th century gold frame.
