This interesting alphabet and Family Record sampler tells the story of the family of Mary Chamberlain Adams who was born in Charlestown, New Hampshire in 1824, the daughter of Dr. Jacob Adams of Hartland, Vermont and Nancy Hubbard Chamberlain of Alstead, New Hampshire. The History of Charlestown, New Hampshire by Rev. Henry Saunderson includes much information about this family, as Mary's maternal grandfather, Hon. John Curtis Chamberlain (1772-1834), represented New Hampshire in the United States Congress.

After Mary's birth, the family removed to Utica, Oneida County, New York. The published account of the family, in agreement with the information directly on the sampler, indicated that Dr. Jacob Adams went to Mobile Bay, Alabama for health reasons; sadly, he died there in 1825. Mary worked this sampler at age 9 in 1834 in Utica (the name of the town is worked in pale threads on the 4th row down at the far right, just above the date, 1834). Mary died in Albion, New York at age 19, again, according to the published information.

The sampler includes a poignant little memorial scene at lower right, with the initials of Mary's deceased father in the tomb under the willow tree. A moral verse is centered between the willow and a small flower bunch that appears along with Mary's initials. The sampler is surrounded by a Greek key border.

Worked in silk on line, the sampler is in very good condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a black painted and molded frame.
