The samplers of Burlington County, New Jersey show strong influence of the Quaker education in that area. Martha R. Aaronson worked this fine sampler and included the classic Quaker alphabet and many traditional Quaker motifs. While she was not a member of the Society of Friends, she likely attended a school run by a teacher who was trained in the style of Quaker samplermaking. The baskets, sprigs of flowers, strawberries and pair of birds all indicate this origin. The large butterflies are also found on samplers from this area.
Martha included the initials of her parents, Thomas and Ann (Foster) Aaronson on her sampler. The 1910 book, Genealogical and Memorial History of the State of New Jersey, Vol. III, contains much information about the Aaronson family, which began with an emigrant from Holland. Members of the family settled in Mansfield Township, Burlington County by the very early 18th century. Further research will likely reveal more information about Martha.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. The lowermost alphabet is pale but fully legible. The sampler has been conservation mounted and is in a painted frame.
