This outstanding sampler is one of the most beautifully worked Dutch samplers we have come across in years. The composition, which is centered on a carnation blossom and other sprigs emerging from a small cornucopia, is very pleasing and the many assorted motifs were meticulously worked in a good variety of stitches, most notably the solidly worked queen's stitched areas. As is typical of samplers made in the Netherlands, the maker signed her work with only her initials, LVG, and she indicated that she was 11 years of age. Scholars of Dutch needlework have identified a group of samplers worked at schools that catered to girls from wealthy families; these schools taught French language as well as many other more elevated subjects and the samplers made at these schools had specific motifs, many of which can be found on this sampler.

Worked in silk on linen, the sampler is in excellent condition with minor running of the black threads is one area at the lower left. It has been conservation mounted and is in an early black and gold frame.
