Vermont samplers exist in far fewer numbers that those from the other New England states and become available only rarely. This sampler was made in northern Vermont, in the small town of Glover in Orleans County (which borders Canada), and which had a population of 902 people in 1830. It is signed, "Henrietta Daniels in the 14th year of her age Glover Vermont Cy of Orleans August 12th 1829."
Large alphabets fill much of the sampler with a pair of simple willow trees flanking the inscription. The three-sided border is formed of diamonds worked in green and pale pink silk. Some of the Henrietta's letters, specifically her lower case "a," were worked backwards consistently and she omitted a letter here and there. The two-line verse is at first, difficult to read but has appeared on other samplers and should read as follows: The rose is red the grass is green / The days are past that I have seen.
Henrietta Daniels was most likely the daughter of Asa Daniels who appears in the 1820 census in Glover with many children. Further research should shed further light on the Daniels family and identify Henrietta.
Worked in silk on linen, the sampler is in very good condition with some slight overall fade. It has been conservation mounted into a black painted and molded frame.
